Chronology
After the events of The Batman (2022), Oz Cobb, aka The Penguin, stages a showdown to take over the criminal underworld in Gotham. Aside from a Bat-signal in the season finale, we never got a glimpse of Robert Pattinson as The Penguin. Colin Farrell fought hard to get his own version of The Penguin’s smoking tobacco in The Batman (2022), but he failed.

However, in his own series, the character is depicted as an occasional tobacco user, preferring cigars. An umbrella falls and the logo is replaced by the Warner Bros. logo.

The first episode is a direct sequel to Matt Reeves’ Batman and I imagine those who haven’t seen the latter will be a bit lost. But I watched The Batman a while ago and this show did a great job of bringing me back to where the movie left off without getting bogged down in a didactic recap. It also does a great job of reviving the film’s aesthetic and gritty tone, though the series has far more moments of wit than the film.
But for now, it’s a great start
As in The Batman, Colin Farrell does a great job of portraying The Penguin as the stereotypical mob “street kid”: "rude, dirty, vivacious and quick to commit violence; but also savvy, cunning and able to read people. The character may have nothing to do with the comic book version, but he’s interesting in his own right. I have my doubts about the Penguin series being set in adolescence; and I don’t know if The Penguin’s machinations will be enough to sustain a full season.
