Four children make a mysterious discovery on their home planet that leads them to become lost in a strange and dangerous galaxy. Jude Law in “Skeleton Crew” and more stars from a galaxy far, far away. The holographic circus that entertains Neel’s younger siblings is the same one that Chewbacca’s family attends in the infamous The Star Wars Holiday Special (1978). Featured in AniMat’s Crazy Cartoon Cast: Silly Old Deadly Bear (2022). I’m approaching this review with caution, recognizing that “Skeleton Crew” seems to be aimed at a younger audience. While kids might enjoy it, I found the first four episodes to be quite disappointing. The story lacks depth, feeling more like a kids’ movie that jumps from one location to another without much consequence. The war scenario feels superficial, and the action sequences don’t have the impact they should. The acting, while not terrible, could be stronger, especially considering the caliber of some of the cast. Even Jude Law seems to be trying hard at times. The production design is impressive, but it can’t save a story that feels slow and ultimately quite forgettable. Perhaps the series will improve later on, but based on my initial viewing, I remain unconvinced.
