Is she a siren or a myth?
Chronology
Partenope is a woman who bears the name of her city.
In the Greek myth, Parthenope is the siren who committed suicide after failing to enchant Odysseus
Her body was brought by the tide to the place where Castel dell’Ovo is now built, and for this she gave the name to the city that would have later become Neapolis, Naples.
In the movie, Parthenope is the embodiment of the city of Naples

Too many familiar scenes, too many obsessions already depicted, too many mannerisms endlessly repeated
The main issue with Parthenope is that it adds nothing new to Paolo Sorrentino’s filmography.
I truly enjoy Sorrentino’s cinema, but the excitement I felt leaving the theater after watching The Consequences of Love is now only a faint memory, faded like the summer youth that once was
While it’s true that cigarettes have become a signature of the director, when every actor-from the beautiful lead to the extras in the background-keeps lighting one up, it quickly becomes cloying, if not outright ridiculous.
