In 1950s Mexico, an American immigrant in his forties leads a lonely life in a small American community. However, the arrival of a young student inspires the man to finally make a meaningful connection with someone. Daniel Craig ended up being the one who convinced Luca Guadagnino to cast Drew Starkey after watching audition tapes with Guadagnino and telling him “This is the guy” upon seeing Starkey. William Lee: Sit on your ass! Or what’s left after four years in the Navy. The Graham Norton Show Starring: Daniel Craig/Nicola Coughlan/Jesse Eisenberg/Kieran Culkin/Flo (2024). The main reason is that the film was too abstract and stream-of-consciousness-like. The overall meaning is to explore the loneliness in the homosexual heart, the difficulty of connecting with others, the pain of not being able to love, and the complex emotions of depression. But the performance technique is very “stream of consciousness”, especially the last 20 minutes, which contain almost no lines and are used entirely to express the inner world of the male character through various blurs, hallucinations and forms of abstract art. Although I understood what the director wanted to express, the form of expression might not be acceptable to the audience and at one point I wanted to leave the stage.
